“The aim is a person who becomes organized to move with minimum effort  and maximum efficiency, not through muscular strength, but through increased consciousness of how movement works.”- Moshe Feldenkrais.

AWARENESS THROUGH MOVEMENT® lessons are group classes suitable for people of all backgrounds, physical capabilities and ages. They are a wonderful opportunity for self-observation and learning through the medium of movement.

Each class is an exploration of some aspect of human movement and function. For example, we might explore how you transition from lying on the floor to standing, how you breathe or how you roll yourself front to back.

You learn to sharpen your awareness and observational skills, to sense the differences between effort and efficiency, strain and ease and to make distinctions about the quality of your movement. Through this gentle process, you will find new options and alternatives for movement that will expand your personal potential and allow you to move, think, sense and feel in more refined ways.

You will improve activities you already do well, discover those you never thought you could do and rediscover those you thought you had lost.

FUNCTIONAL INTEGRATION® is a one-on-one, hands-on interaction specifically designed to meet the needs of an individual. Lessons can be given to address issues of pain and injury, loss of movement, or to improve posture, vitality and functional capacity.

Functional Integration lessons are suitable for everyone - from young children needing specific support in their development, to athletes and performing artists who are looking to find a more discreet level of refinement and everyone in between.

So what actually takes place in a Functional Integration® session?

Using a quality of touch that is gentle, non-invasive, informative, and interactive in nature we very carefully begin to learn how to examine what it is that you do in movement and action. How you perform functional activities such as sitting, standing, reaching overhead, walking and how you move from one position to another.

The practitioner helps to guide you to be able to sense and perceive what you are doing that is causing discomfort or is interfering with what you want to be doing. You learn to pay attention to how you work against yourself. Together we will find movement alternatives, which allow your actions to be more efficient, easy and pleasurable.

At times during the one-hour lesson, you will be involved in sensing yourself as your body is moved and at other times you will be more active. At the end of the session we will explore how activities of sitting, standing or walking are influenced by the effects of the lesson. This will help you to take your learning with you into your daily life.

As you learn more about yourself, you will find a way to apply your learning into various activities and situations. You will find that you will resolve the issues that brought you to see me and discover the true and exciting potential for learning and for life that is within you.

Both Functional Integration® and Awareness Through Movement® lessons use movement as the medium or means to explore the concept of our self –  the way in which we move, think, sense, feel and ultimately act.
